Dr. Christian Wigmore
FOUNDER
When I started my first year at UBC Medical School, I quickly noticed something missing: financial education. With a background in Business and experience in the finance world, I thought I would feel prepared. But like most students, I still found myself overwhelmed by lines of credit, insurance, and the pressure to make big financial decisions with little guidance.
Since then, I have been sharing my journey, navigating debt, burnout, and the countless financial choices along the way. I began documenting the tools, ideas, and mindset shifts that helped me take back control and build a life that feels more free and intentional. That is what sparked Budget Your MD.
At the same time, I was carving out my path in medicine. I discovered a passion for the variety and relationships in Family Practice, and I am now a second-year Family Medicine resident in Prince George, BC. Training in the North has given me the privilege of working in rural hospitals, urban clinics, and everything in between, experiences that continue to shape both my career and my perspective on how finances fit into the bigger picture of physician wellness.
What started as a few posts and conversations has grown into a community of Canadian medical students and residents who are also trying to figure it out, how to budget, protect their income, plan ahead, and make smarter financial decisions without losing sight of their values.
It has been a wild ride so far, from studying for exams to building tools between call shifts, from managing patients in the hospital to launching the kind of resources I wish existed when I started. If you have followed, shared, or supported any part of this project, thank you. It means the world.
My goal is simple: to keep showing up, keep building useful resources, and make financial literacy in medicine just a little less overwhelming. Because the truth is, our financial health plays a huge role in our overall health, happiness, and ability to thrive as physicians.
